An endeavor by Best Lawyers®, this list meticulously curates law firms that epitomize excellence, gauged through stringent peer evaluations and rigorous independent research. To even be considered, a firm must include an attorney who made it to the recent edition of The Best Lawyers in America®.
The list delves deeper than national rankings, classifying firms across three tiers on a national level and within 188 distinct metropolitan regions. While national rankings span 75 practice areas, metropolitan areas can boast rankings for up to 127 practice areas. The essence of the tier system stems from invaluable insights procured from the Law Firm Leaders survey, where participants lend their perspective on preeminent firms across 75 nationally ranked areas. The tiers represent feedback from a staggering 10 million evaluations of paramount attorneys spread across 20,000 firms nationwide.
Best Lawyers Methodology
The process of selection is as rigorous as it is comprehensive:
- Firms are filtered based on their nominations in that year’s Best Lawyers®.
- Selected law firms are handed submission packets intended for feedback from former clients. These clients are probed on various parameters, from the firm’s acumen and responsiveness to its cost-effectiveness. Best Lawyers’ own nomination ballots further fuel this process by including queries on a firm’s competitive stature, referral prospects, and domain expertise. This data from Best Lawyers voting is a cornerstone in sculpting the Best Law Firms scores.
- Quantitative and qualitative feedback is funneled into an overarching “Best Law Firms” score.
- Firms are benchmarked against their peers within the same practice and metropolitan domain. The tiers are stratified somewhat akin to a curved grading system, with Tier 1 housing firms close to the highest-scoring ones, and subsequent tiers expanding in their score range.
