The 2026 Super Lawyers List’s Rigorous Standards
Super Lawyers has a famously demanding selection process, which starts well before the publication of any list. Independent researchers dig into each candidate, weigh third-party input, and collect nominations submitted by other members of the bar. Attorneys are asked to put forward the names of the strongest lawyers they've encountered firsthand—sometimes from the other side of a case.
Every nominee is then measured against twelve markers of professional excellence:
- Verdicts and settlements obtained
- Deals and transactions completed
- Representative clients
- Length of practice
- Awards and honors received
- Position and responsibilities within the firm
- Certifications and special licenses
- Involvement in the bar and the profession
- Community service and pro bono work
- Published writing and scholarship
- Academic and professional background
- Other significant accomplishments
Each of these factors carries its own weighted value, with points combining into an overall score for every nominee. The attorneys who earn the highest scores are seated on a Blue Ribbon Panel, drawing on their own experience and judgment to review the rest of the field. After that final review, no more than 5% of the practicing attorneys in a state—spanning roughly 70 practice areas—make the cut. The end result is a dependable guide to the top-performing attorneys in a particular region and field of law.
