Regina Husbands and Keith Husbands, her husband vs. A.H. Robins Company and Aetna Casualty and Surety Company

U.S. District Court, Southern District, Florida

Our client, Regina Husbands, lived in the U.S. Virgin Islands with her husband and children. Mrs. Husbands, on the advice of her doctor, elected to use the Dalkon Shield I.U.D. as her means of contraception. The Dalkon Shield was manufactured by the A.H. Robbins Co. of Richmond, Virginia. What Mrs. Husbands never knew when she began using the Dalkon Shield was that, because of its defective design, the Dalkon Shield presented women with the very real likelihood of contracting pelvic inflammatory disease. And that is exactly what happened to our client. While wearing the Dalkon Shield Mrs. Husbands became gravely ill and nearly died. The Dalkon Shield was eventually removed and found to be the cause of her infection. Mrs. Husband was left with permanent injuries as a result of the infection. We filed a lawsuit on her behalf and it was tried to a jury in federal court in Miami. After a two week trial the jury found that the Dalkon Shield was indeed defective and returned a verdict of $4,500,000. It was one of the largest verdicts involving the Dalkon Shield in the country. The Dalkon Shield was subsequently taken off the market and is no longer sold. This case was brought to us by Mrs. Husband's mother who was a juror in the Tietig v. Chris Craft case.
